Tees Cottage – Open Day »

June 16, 2012, 9:00 am - June 17, 2012, 5:00 pm

From 1849 Tees Cottage Pumping Station revolutionized water supply in Darlington and Teesside by offering cleaner, piped water to inhabitants who had previously relied on wells and rainwater tubs. The engines at Tees Cottage pumped water from the River Tees, which was then filtered and supplied to the water company’s customers.

The site’s first steam engines and boilers have not survived. However, on Open Days at Tees Cottage you can still see the 1902 Lancashire Boilers, 1904 steam powered Beam Engine and 1914 Gas powered engine, all in operation and still pumping water from the River Tees (although no longer supplying the town’s water!) We also have a Blacksmith’s Shop, where demonstrations are usually given, and a Miniature Railway, with rides provided by Cleveland Association of Model Engineers for a small additional charge. Refreshments are available in our Tea Room.

Queens Diamond Jubilee – Lightening of the Beacons »

June 4, 2012, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Britain has a long history of beacon lighting spanning many hundreds of years. We have celebrated Royal Weddings, Jubilees and Coronations by lighting beacons on village greens, castle battlements, church towers, farms, beaches, front gardens, car parks and mountain tops!

A beacon chain, once used as a tool for communication, has now become a symbol of unity across towns, borders, countries and continents and is often the central point of focus for any outdoor gathering or celebration.

In 1897 beacons were lit nationally to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. In 1977 and 2002 beacons were lit to celebrate The Queen’s SIlver and Golden Jubilees.

On Monday 4th June 2012, the aim is to light 2,012(or more) beacons – the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, the Commonwealth and other countries around the world to mark this important and historic moment in The Queen’s Reign.

Be part of this incredible event with the lightening of beacons across Darlington on 4 June.

Tees Cottage Pumping Station – open day »

May 12, 2012, 9:00 am - May 13, 2012, 5:00 pm

For more information, contact Mr Beautyman, on 01325 350718

March 23, 2012, 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Community leaders are once again supporting the annual Best of Darlington Awards which recognise the achievements made by people who live, work or study in the town.

The 2012 awards will feature 12 individual categories, with those shortlisted also in the frame to be named the overall citizen and young citizen of the year.

A range of fields, including sports, arts, business, volunteering and achievements in the classroom, are honoured in the annual awards.

There are awards for contribution to the community – one for adults and one for children – sport, the arts, business and the environment.

There are three student awards – for academic excellence, vocational excellence and exceptional student.

The other three awards go to volunteer of the year, the Putting Darlington on the Map category, for someone who has made the rest of the country aware of the town, and the Darlington Thru The Lens photography section.

The awards night will be held on Friday, March 23, once again at Darlington College.

It is the seventh ceremony for an awards scheme borne out of the town’s Citizen of the Year accolade.

Bite Size Business Basics – Successful Selling – What It Takes and How to do IT? »

October 13, 2011, 11:45 am - 2:00 pm

This FREE seminar is presented by Jackie Wade, who has been running her successful sales training and coaching business ‘Winning Sales’ for the last 10 years.

Jackie says “Today’s marketplace is noisy, cluttered, frantic. Many desperate sellers; few, and often relunctant, price-sensitive buyers.

The real key to survival and growth for over 4.8 million small businesses in the UK and over half a million start-ups is not neccessarily having the best product or service; much more important is being able to connect with real potential buyers and convincing them to take action and buy.

The business challenge for many is often an aversion to sales, selling and sales people by both buyer and seller!”

This Bite Size Basic event is a working lunch session. Registration will begin at 11.45, with the presentation commencing at 12.00pm and will run approximately 1 hour over lunch. There will be an opportunity for questions and networking after the presentation.
